  • Alameda County Fair. Recognized by the Western Fairs Association's (WFA) 40th Annual Achievement Awards Program for accomplishments related to the 2002 Fair, the Alameda County Fair, features a carnival, horse racing, exhibits, a sports expo, artist displays, a talent competition, music, food, fireworks and the annual Fair Parade.
  • Chabot Space and Science Center. A sci-fi playland in the Oakland hills, this 86,000-square-foot center boasts one of the largest public telescopes in the United States; an exciting space-flight simulator; a 250-seat planetarium; a large-screen, domed Megamax theater; and many hands-on science and technology exhibits. 10000 Skyline Blvd., 866-676-1418.
  • Overstock.com Coliseum and the Arena in Oakland. This awesome complex features a 62,500-seat stadium (home to the Oakland Raiders and the Oakland A's) and a renovated 19,200-seat arena (home of the Golden State Warriors). It is also a major concert venue. 7000 Coliseum Way, 866-676-1418.
  • Oakland Zoo. Located in Knowland Park, the Oakland Zoo houses more than 375 native and exotic animals of 114 species. Its 50-plus exhibits are organized into geographic regions configured to resemble the animals' native habitats.   • Jack London Square. This popular site at the water's edge of theSan Francisco Bay features dining, entertainment, shopping, and spots for daydreaming.   • San Francisco Golden GateSan Francisco. The magnificent City by the Bay offers visitors charm, cuisine, and avant-culture in one of the world's greatest natural settings.   • Japanese Gardens Hayward. The Japanese Gardens promote tranquility and unity. Within a relatively small space, visitors experience the sense of expanse with a 4,000 square-foot lake, seven wooden structures, a waterfall, and five planting mounds. Over 4,000 plants have been cared for in the traditional Japanese style.

  • Shoreline Interpretive Center. The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center fosters the connection between people and the San Francisco Bay Estuary by providing environmental education and recreation programs.   • Hayward Air Terminal. The Hayward Air Terminal is one of the major civil airports in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its primary function is to serve general aviation, which includes private, recreational, charter, business and corporate aircraft.
